The Old Town, Zurich's beating heart

Strolling through Zurich's Altstadt is like stepping back in time, wandering along cobblestone lanes lined with half-timbered houses and sculpted fountains. The district stretches on both sides of the Limmat, the river that flows through the city before emptying into the lake. On the east bank, the Niederdorf brims with artisan shops, cosy cafes and shaded little squares perfect for lingering. On the west bank, elegant streets lead to the showcase windows of the famous Bahnhofstrasse, one of Europe's most prestigious shopping avenues.

Two landmark churches dominate the old town skyline. The Grossmunster, with its unmistakable twin towers, rewards those who climb the Karlsturm with a breathtaking panorama over the rooftops, the lake and the snow-capped peaks beyond. Uetliberg, a natural balcony over the city

Just twenty minutes by train from the central station, the summit of Uetliberg rises to 871 metres and offers a jaw-dropping view over Zurich, the lake and the Alpine chain. Hiking trails wind through ancient beech and yew forests, while an observation tower provides a full 360-degree panorama. At dusk, the sunset from this natural balcony is one of the most memorable sights of any stay in Zurich. In winter, a toboggan run delights families, and a mountain restaurant serves regional specialities in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
